Downtown Red Deer Elects Three New Board Members

The Downtown Business Association is pleased to welcome three newly elected Board Members who were elected by ballot at the end of November. These three people were selected out of a pool of six candidates which members of the BRZ voted on. Newly elected are – Lucas Ford, owner/president of Classic Tattoo Co. Ltd. located on Little Gaetz Avenue. Rolland Forsland, part owner of DOSE Coffee, and Sheena Johnson, part owner of the Bra Lounge located on Alexander Way. They will join Board members; Bill Graham, Bryan Balderson, Lorna Watkinson Zimmer, Brian Olstad, Tom Lewis, Marilyn Mah, Brett Salomons and council representative Cindy Jefferies. Read more

Making a Connection

Considering her life’s journey has taken Galia Kwetny from the former Soviet Union to Israel to Alberta, it’s no surprise that geography is the theme of her art exhibit, Connecting Places. “When you move from country to country, or continent to continent, there’s a trail you leave behind,” said Kwetny, whose abstract topographic paintings are showing at the Harris-Warke Gallery in Sunworks in downtown Red Deer. City to Begin Snow Removal Sunday

City of Red Deer crews will plow downtown streets starting on Sunday, and then hit collectors, transit routes and residential streets next to schools starting on Wednesday. Snow removal for Priority 3 (downtown) will kick off on Sunday at 8 p.m. and will run overnight. At 7 a.m. on Wednesday, city crews will begin removing snow from Priority 4 (collector roads, etc.) roads. One work crew will start in the Kentwood area and work south, while another crew will start in the Vanier Woods subdivision and work north. Read more

Nova Staff Gets Home Downtown

Downtown Red Deer will soon welcome a familiar corporate resident. Nova Chemical Corp. has confirmed that it’s signed a leasing agreement for three floors in Executive Place. The Calgary-based petrochemical company, which operates ethylene and polyethylene plants east of Red Deer at Joffre, has already begun preparing space in the 4900 50th St. building for its use. Festival Lights the Night and The Santa Parade Kicks Off in Downtown

We welcome Santa, community businesses and organizations to the Santa Claus Parade in Downtown Red Deer this Saturday, November 17 at 5:00pm, after the Festival Lights the Night tree lighting beginning at 4:00 pm in City Hall Park. Awards are offered this year to the brightest and best entries with judging before the parade at 4:30pm. 1st place $2000; 2nd place $1500; 3rd place $1000 and People’s Choice Award $500. The parade begins at 52 Street and 49 Avenue, goes east on 48 Avenue and ends on the corner of Ross Street and Little Gaetz Avenue (50th Avenue). This year the Red Deer Regional Airport is the presenting sponsor. The Downtown Business Association wishes to thank Gaetz Avenue United Church for running a hot chocolate station, the Hub for holding activities, and all partners with the Festival of the Trees that are supporting efforts for this enormous festive event. Road Closure Notice for the Santa Claus Parade

3:00pm – 52 Street between 51 Avenue and 49 Avenue for the muster area for parade entries close. 4:00pm – no parking after 4pm on both sides of Ross St. from 47 Ave. to Gaetz Ave. Any parked vehicles on 47 or 48 Avenue will have to wait until after the parade to move. Vehicles on Ross from 48 St. to Gaetz Ave. will be towed. 4:30pm – 49 St. to 52 St. on 49 Ave. will be closed to traffic until 6:30pm Read more

Call to Visual Artists

A call for submissions encourages visual artists to get rooted in the arts. In celebration of Red Deer’s selection as host city for the 2013 Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artists Awards, the City of Red Deer Culture Services and the Harris-Warke Gallery will host a juried art exhibition titled ‘Rooted in the Arts’ that will be on display in June 2013, at the same time as the awards. The exhibition will celebrate visual arts and culture in Red Deer in conjunction with many other cultural events surrounding the Distinguished Artists Awards. Read more
