Winner of the DBA Window Decorating Contest Announced

(Red Deer, AB) — The Red Deer Downtown Business Association (DBA) is pleased to announce the winner of the DBA’s Winter Wonderland Window Decorating Contest. The winner was chosen November 25 by a panel of judges consisting of DBA Staff members. Out of 21 participants, Chapman Riebeek LLP was the winner.

The contest began at the beginning of November and the DBA encouraged Downtown businesses to take part in the Window Decorating Contest by providing window paint kits. The purpose of the contest was to increase walkability throughout Downtown and provide Red Deerians with an alternative way to celebrate Red Deer Lights the Night, since this year’s celebration was modified due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The winner of the contest, Chapman Riebeek LLP, received 20 free radio ads on Kraze 101.3. Each of the 21 participating businesses will be keeping their displays up for the holiday season.

The Downtown Business Association has been operating in Red Deer for over 30 years, serving approximately five-hundred business owners in the Downtown area. Through partnerships and leadership in advocacy and promotion, the DBA is the catalyst for a vibrant and prosperous downtown that is the place to live, work, play and do business.

Business Spotlight: U Pick Koffee

This week’s Business Spotlight shines on U Pick Koffee! Located at 4710 51 Ave, this local shop has everything you need for your Keurig K-Cup stock. We sat down with the general manager, Ken Van Someren, to learn more about this business!

What is your business?

Our business is U Pick Koffee, here in Red Deer. We have only been in business for a couple of months. Our main product line is Keurig K-Cups. We specialize in the mix-and-match program, where you can buy many pods of different kinds to try and find a new favorite pod!

When did you open?

We opened officially on the 1st of September and our operating hours are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m, Monday through Friday as well as 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday.

What would you say makes your business unique?

I think it’s unique because of the mix-and-match program. You can buy K-Cups in a number of grocery stores, but we have a much bigger variety. We are working towards getting up to 250 to 300 different varieties. We have regular coffee, decaf coffee, we have teas, we have flavored coffees, we have dark roasts—all the roasts that you could want! And we have some that are even on special. Also, we don’t have an exact date yet, but you can check our Facebook page and Website because we will be having a coffee tasting night in November!

What are some products/services that you offer?

The products we carry are of all varieties, we don’t carry just Folgers. We’ve got Timothy’s. Tim Horton’s, Van Houtte, Torani, and Starbucks. We have pretty much all of them and we’re getting more in all the time. We’ll soon have some Christmas special ones in— a Christmas hot chocolate is coming! We also sell regular bean and ground coffee from two suppliers right now.  They’re both unique to this area and you can’t buy them in just any grocery store. One is White Frog Café, from Sylvan Lake. There is only a couple of us in Red Deer that sell it, and we have grounds and beans. We also have coffee from a company called Rampage Coffee, they are out of Saskatoon. We have beans and grounds from them, and we’re the only ones in Central Alberta that are selling that product.

Why did you choose Downtown Red Deer as the location for your business?

We wanted somewhere that there would be visibility. We didn’t want to go into a mall where we were mandated to the hours that we can open. We wanted good exposure and we found that in Downtown Red Deer.

What do you think makes Downtown vibrant?

I think it’s the people that are Downtown and working together to make it better. Although there is a lot of empty spots Downtown right now, the ones that are there are really into the Downtown and want to make it even more vibrant. I think the City is working on that as well, leaving the patio open this year. I think that’s a good idea. There are things that need to happen, and they will happen!

I love Downtown Red Deer because… The people are friendly, and the businesses are inviting. People don’t want to go to malls all the time!

If you’re looking for a place that offers a wide variety of coffee and specialized K-Cups, look no further than U Pick Koffee!

Business Spotlight: Pure

This week the Downtown Business Association Business Spotlight shines on Pure! This multidisciplinary health care office is located at #207, 4807 50 Avenue (Little Gaetz) and we had a chance to sit down with the owner, Dr. Michael Heinzlmeir, for more information about the business!

What is your business?

Our business is Pure. It is a multidisciplinary health care office. Its chiropractic, physical therapy, massage therapy, kinesiology, personal training, we have dieticians and psychologists—all working together under one roof, providing healthcare services for all of Central Alberta.

When did you open?

The business was opened in September of 2005. It started with just my wife and I, way back in 2005, and we built the business into a multidisciplinary communitive. Now we’re sitting at about 30 employees and over that time frame we’ve added business partners, so Dr. Scott is actually one of our business partners now. He came on board as a partner in 2015, and we continue to grow and expand from there.

What would you say makes your business unique?

So the one thing that really makes us unique here is our team-based approach to care. It is truly a team checkup and atmosphere with how we provide care in the practice. One of my greatest frustrations, when I started in practice, was trying to coordinate care amongst different practitioners outside of the practice. So, what we did was we started bringing everybody into the practice so we can communicate internally about cases. Each week we actually sit down and review all the case files together as a team, and then make team-based recommendations based on what the patient’s goals are for their health, where they want to get to, and then how our team can help them move towards that. That’s what really sets us apart from everybody.

What are some products/services that you offer?

I guess I kind of alluded to those in the beginning. So, chiropractic, which is what we started with, physical therapy, massage therapy, personal training, kinesiology services. So, that would include Kinesio Taping, home exercises, in-office exercises, and stretches. We also run some boot camp programs around town as well through XLR40 program which is done through our personal training division.

Why did you choose Downtown Red Deer as the location for your business?

When I was looking for a place to lease in 2005, I was brand-new out of school and I didn’t have a lot of money to start with. To be honest, the lease rates were really attractive in Downtown Red Deer. As a new startup business, combined with the supports of the businesses around the area, it gave us the opportunity to get on our feet and establish a successful business—Which would have been difficult to do in the outlying areas where the rents were three or four times more then what we ended up paying down here.

What do you think makes Downtown vibrant?

I think that one of the things that have been really nice to see, with the city, is that they’ve kept a lot of park space Downtown in Red Deer. We’ve got City Hall Park, we’ve got the trail system that runs through Downtown. I think that really helps bring an interesting dynamic to a Downtown core you don’t see in a lot of other places. The other thing that’s neat about here is there are some really established businesses down here that really support Downtown. I think that Downtown is really the heart of the community and for us, it’s an easily accessible place from anywhere in Red Deer to get to. Whether you’re from North end, South end, or East or West, it’s easy to get here, versus some of the other areas which take a while to travel. So, I think that’s part of what makes it vibrant. It’s an intersection and crossroads for the city, so everyone can congregate in the Downtown Core.

I love Downtown Red Deer because… I’m from Red Deer originally, I was born and raised here. Downtown, as I said, it’s the heart of the city. Red Deer’s gone through some rebuilding efforts to do that and I feel like there’s always this opportunity for businesses to establish themselves Downtown and there’s a lot of positive energy that comes along with that. Looking at Downtown Red Deer as this place that’s really favorable for startups to come is really a positive thing for both the City and Downtown Red Deer.

Business Spotlight: 4 Pillars

This week’s Business Spotlight shines on 4 Pillars! Located at 4779 49 St, 4 Pillars is the place to go to find debt relief. We sat down with the owner and Debt Relief Specialist, Eric Everett, for more information about the business!

What is your business?

Well, we help people through their debt problems, so we have debt relief solutions and financial advice on how to solve problems.

When did you open?

Well, 4 Pillars, across Canada, started in 2002, so 18 years and Red Deer started 7 years ago. I purchased July 1st of 2019.

What would you say makes your business unique?

I have to say great staff, or they’ll beat me up! What I love is that we don’t just help with debt. We have all kinds of different solutions to help people through whatever needs they have, so when they walk out they say, ‘Wow! That was easy!’

What are some products/services that you offer?

One of the most effective solutions is a carefully structured Consumer Proposal, filed with and administered by a Licensed insolvency Trustee.  I call it bankruptcy-light. There are less consequences, versus bankruptcy and it’s a very good solution for many people to end their debt problems and rebuild their financial future. And it’s not just that people have little debt problems; our average debt level is 60,000$, it’s hard to get out of that by themselves. The government came up with the Consumer Proposal in 1992 so that people can come out through their debt problems without more drastic measures and so that they can have hope for their future. I’m actually a hope builder!

Why did you choose Downtown Red Deer as the location for your business?

Well, great visibility is the main reason. We have about 10,000 cars drive by our location every day, so that’s huge for us. And then Lucky Restaurant is right next door!

What do you think makes Downtown vibrant?

Lots of access, ease of getting around, everything is located in a small area, and it’s not hard to get in and out of the Downtown area like a lot of centers.

I love Downtown Red Deer because… It’s a good business location for me.

If you or someone you know is looking for assistance getting out of debt, 4 Pillars is the place to go.

Business Spotlight: Advocate Law

This week’s Business Spotlight shines on Advocate Law! Located at 1-4820 47 Ave, Advocate Law offers Criminal Defense Lawyers for those that have been charged with criminal offenses. We sat down with one of the founding lawyers, Maurice C. Collard, for more information about the business!

What is your business?

We are criminal trial lawyers. We help people who have been charged with criminal offenses through the justice system.

When did you open?

 November of 2016.

What would you say makes your business unique?

We are a boutique criminal law firm. Criminal defense is the only service we offer as lawyers. It allows us to dedicate all our time and energy on one area of law so that we can get the best results for our clients.

What are some products/services that you offer?

We offer criminal defense against all Criminal Code and Controlled Drugs and Substances Act charges as well we are able to help people get pardons or record suspensions. The services that we offer start from pre-charge advice, to bail, to docket appearances, to negotiations with the Crown, to trials, to resolutions of matters and appeals.

Why did you choose Downtown Red Deer as the location for your business?

We appreciate the proximity to the Courthouse and other offices of justice stakeholders. As well, we think the Downtown office serves our clients better as many of them come from throughout Central Alberta.

What do you think makes Downtown vibrant?

I think one of the key pieces of Downtown Red Deer is City Hall Park. It is enjoyable throughout the summer and into the winter, with both the flowers and lights. It is a center for all members of our community to congregate and enjoy their time. Working Downtown at lunch hour really allows me the opportunity to see that park being utilized to its full potential. It is a beautiful and enjoyable space.

I love Downtown Red Deer because… Downtown Red Deer offers my business the services it needs, with easy access to the Courthouse, the Red Deer Remand Centre, the Provincial Crown Prosecutor’s office, the Federal Crown Prosecutor’s office, and other lawyer’s offices all in a nearby and easy to access space.
