Business Spotlight: Tribe

This week’s Business Spotlight shines on Tribe! This unique restaurant is located right on Ross Street (4930 Ross Street) and offers a menu inspired from places all around the world. We sat down with manager, Brandon Bouchard, to learn more!

What is your business?

Tribe is a restaurant and bar located in the heart of Red Deer’s downtown on the Ross St Patio.

When did your business open?

Our space has been open for roughly 4 years. In that time we’ve expanded and doubled in square footage and also tripled our staff.

What makes your business unique?

We believe we have the “sexiest” room in town. Our guests are often commenting positively on the space and how much they love the warm ambiance. “There’s no other place like this in Red Deer”, “I feel like I’m in another city”, or just “Wow” are the words we hear the most. Our “Modern World Food” is very popular and is inspired from regions around the globe. And one of the main reasons we continue to remain a hot spot in the downtown, we believe, is our staff. Our team is absolutely amazing. Friendly, funny, and flirty… the staff’s number one focus is the guest experience and it shows. Our room is often filled with laughter and huge smiles. Our goal is that no one leaves hungry, and everyone leaves happy!

Our slogan is “Eat a Little. Drink a Little. Flirt a Little. Tell Your Most Awesome Stories.”

What are some products/services that you offer?

Aside from the obvious dine-in and takeout options we also offer private party bookings and can typically cater to groups of easily 40-50 guests. We also offer the occasional theme or event nights such as Tapas nights, Wine Tasting events, Holiday Parties and more!

Why did you choose Downtown Red Deer as the location for your business?

Tribe, as well as it’s sister store Sunwork’s Living, are located downtown because Red Deer’s downtown is the place to be! To be surrounded by so many other unique shops and businesses makes being in the area a truly wonderful experience and we wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.

What do you think makes Downtown vibrant?

In order for any downtown to be vibrant, the citizens need to occupy that space. With the growing number of retail shops, restaurants and bars, and other services that can be found in the area it’s no wonder folks are visiting the downtown more than ever. Shopping local and supporting small businesses is important now more than ever and with endless locally owned businesses in the area it’s no wonder we are seeing more vibrancy in the area, and we believe this trend will continue to attract NEW businesses downtown.

I love Downtown Red Deer because… most everything you might need or want can be found in one attractive and exciting neighbourhood, and your friends are probably there too.

Business Spotlight: GrupDesk

It’s Monday and this week our Business Spotlight feature is GrupDesk! This open and collaborative workspace is located at 5212 48 Street, Unit B102. We had the chance to sit down with owner, Gio Aguirre, to learn more about the space!

What is your business?

GrupDesk is a new concept for co-working space, a space that catapults businesses, small business owners and freelancers to the next level. It’s for somebody that is looking to do their work in a professional environment, or they can not work from home because it’s too distracting. Now, with COVID, people cannot work in their offices or go to Starbucks or other coffee shops, which are too noisy or too busy. Some people can’t afford to get a full office, with all the expenses that come with that, so that is why GrupDesk was created, to be that middle ground. A professional environment for people to come do business with customers, while still being able to keep the cost down.

 When did you open?

We opened in 2018, officially in February. We have been going strong since then! I think it was a little bit of a hard adoption, people didn’t know what we were about as it is a new concept. In Red Deer there was only one coworking space before our time. When we opened, we saw the need in the market. I myself am an entrepreneur with other businesses but I needed a place to run those business from and this was the perfect opportunity to create a coworking space where people like myself could come do business.

What would you say makes your business unique?

I think the uniqueness comes from us breaking the standard of normality. Usually when you open a business you rent an office, you meet with your customers there but you have this huge overhead. We are the flexible middle ground, for a little a month you have a full office and professional environment. I think that’s what makes us unique. Also, GrupDesk offers mailboxes and printing services as well. I think that’s the differential point, no one offers those three elements but GrupDesk is a place to do business and meet with customers, a place to do printing and a mailbox that gives you a business address instead of your house.

What are some products/services that you offer?

So we have the coworking space, of course, and for the mailboxes the difference between that and other businesses that offer mailbox service is that we provide a city address. It’s not a PO BOX, its a suite number so for online ordering that’s huge. What makes us really awesome is that we send email notifications as soon as you get mail, which other people don’t do. So that’s super important. For me, I needed that for a long time. I had to drive all the way to Red Deer from where I live in Blackfalds just to find an empty mailbox. So, when I started this, I was like that’s not going to happen anymore! So, we started the email notifications. When we took over this space there was a printer here already, so we took over that contract and now we can offer printing services that are competitive with the online printing providers. A lot of people don’t know we do this so were pushing forward with promoting that services but its one of our strongest points.

Why did you choose Downtown Red Deer as the location for your business?

It’s the central point of the city. If you’re coming from the North or the South, Downtown Red Deer has everything. Everyone knows Downtown, everyone passes through Downtown so that was the main reason why we chose it.

What do you think makes Downtown vibrant?

The variety of businesses in the area. So, if you go to the South it’s a conglomerate of certain types of shops, but Downtown has everything that anybody can think of. We have a travel agency, a VR place, a grocery store, lawyers and a coworking space. A huge variety of businesses, I think that’s what makes downtown vibrant.

I love Downtown Red Deer because… it’s so flexible and you can find everything in Downtown and the environment that has been created around business and customersI think it’s a great community. It’s not isolated to the North or the South, Downtown is the heart of Red Deer.

GrupDesk is the place to check out of you’re looking for a new space to work from if you’re working from home or looking for a new space to run your small business.

Business Spotlight: Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria

It’s Monday and this week our Business Spotlight feature is Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria! This Italian inspired pizzeria is located at 5016 51 Avenue. We had the chance to sit down with owner, Ryan Curtis, to learn more!

What is your business?

 Famoso Pizzaria.

 When did you open?

We opened in July of 2013.

What would you say makes your business unique?

We’re pretty specialized in the type of pizza that we serve, obviously focusing on Neapolitan pizza, thin crust, and importing most of our ingredients from Italy. For example, Double Zero Flour from Naples, Campania tomatoes from the Campania region of Italy, just outside of Naples, which are grown in volcanic ash, fresh Fior di Latte Mozzarella, which is made fresh for us every week, locally of course. It cooks in our Italian Forno at 900 degrees for only about 90 seconds. So really thin-crust, softer style of pizza, rather than the typical North American style pizza.

What are some products/services that you offer?

Neapolitan Style Pizza, and we now have a different, thicker crust which is a more New York-Sicilian style pizza. Lots of craft beer, wine, cocktails, appetizers, salads, gelato—quite a few things here!

Why did you choose Downtown Red Deer as the location for your business?

We thought it would be a really great fit in the sense that we’re central to everywhere in the city. We’re 10-12 minutes from any given place. The nice part about where we are is, we do have free parking! For any perceived lack of parking, that’s something that unfortunately plagues Downtown, even though it’s not well founded, I think.

What do you think makes Downtown vibrant?

In terms of Red Deer, if your talking dining, I think we have the best kind of diverse dining scene. Occams Razor, Tribe, Dose—best coffee in town! —some really neat, unique offerings. I know we’re a franchise but we’re still pretty unique in the city. There’s just a lot of neat shops like Alta, Rob Rae’s, and products and services that you can’t find anywhere else in the city. I think it’s awesome, I mean, look at Downtown right now through the holidays with City Hall all lit up with the lights—it’s just beautiful! I think the sense of community that a lot of the businesses have, or at least I’ve experienced in our time here, it’s been great. It just makes us so unique.

I love Downtown Red Deer because… of the community spirit down here and the DBA’s help and guidance to tie it all together. If I had to pick just one thing, I would say winter Downtown. City Hall lights, it’s just so nice when you are hanging out down here. Even though Red Deer Light’s the Night was a bit of a sad reminder of how much things have changed, it’s usually one of our busiest nights, the best of Red Deer is still on display and it’s a great way to show off our own area in Red Deer.

Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria is open for curbside pick-up and delivery! Check out their website for their menu and their social media for updates on new menu items and specials!

Business Spotlight: Heritage Family Dental

This week our Business Spotlight focuses on Heritage Family Dental! Located at 5212 48 St C108, this cosmetic and restorative dentistry office offers services such as dental cleanings, cosmetic dentistry, crowns and bridges, implants, sedation, children’s dentistry, orthodontics, and wisdom teeth removal. We sat down with Dr. Levi Lowry and Dr. Tyson Allred to learn more about their business!

What is your business?

Lowry: We are a dental office; family dentistry.

When did you open?

Allred: Well it’s been around since 2007, about 13 years.

What would you say makes your business unique?

Lowry: We try to treat people the way we would treat our family. We want to make sure people are comfortable and that they are getting the care that they need in a way it’s as relaxing as much as it can be to them. I think that’s our main goal; to make sure people are happy and comfortable while they’re here because we know it’s not always the most comfortable experience.”

Allred: We’re not a corporation, this isn’t a faceless business. It’s Levi and I, and we’re very focused on our craft. We are not out to take over the world with Dental franchises! We’re just here to be good dentists. That’s what we like to do.

What are some products/services that you offer?

Lowry: We do a little bit of everything. We do orthodontics, we do cosmetics, regular family check-ups, and cleanings.

Allred: We’ve got a lot that we do between the two of us. I do a lot of surgery and sedation, and he [Levi] does a lot of orthodontics and we both do implants. We offer almost everything.

Why did you choose Downtown Red Deer as the location for your business?

Allred: Well we didn’t choose it, it kind of chose us! I stepped into this in 2012 as an associate and bought the practice in 2018 and sold half of it to him [Levi] in 2019. Downtown is a great location because we’re not excluding any part of town, it’s accessible to everyone. Regular parking, and it’s good exposure. It’s a good location.

What do you think makes Downtown vibrant?

Lowry: There’s a lot of synergy with the business around. People can come here and get basically anything that they need whether it’s a bite to eat or to get some shopping done. There’s a lot to offer!

I love Downtown Red Deer because…

Lowry: It’s just a good place, good exposure, good location central to Red Deer.

Allred: Well, the Ross Street area. It’s got the foot traffic and it’s opened up to a pedestrian style environment. There are some restaurants and patios and they’ve gone on to have live music in an area that used to be parking. They’ve changed the environment, which is nice!

Heritage Family Dental is the place to go for all of your dental needs, check out their website for more information!
