Cafe Millennium

How did you start your business?

We bought an established business from someone else.

What kind of products do you sell?

We sell soup and sandwiches, lunch specials, bakery items, and chocolates for different seasons.

What is your “best selling” product?

Our best selling product is our Pumpkin Cookies!

What makes you a unique vendor?

We make fresh baked, homestyle items on the daily!

Where are you located and/or can you find your products at other locations?

111 – 4909 49 street in the Millenium Centre Building.

How long have you been a part of the Downtown Red Deer Market?

Ever since the downtown market started, over 10 years.

What is your favourite thing about the Downtown Red Deer Market?

It is small with all of the essentials.

Taste of Ukraine

How did you start your business?

I was cooking cupcakes and meals for my friends when I was on days off from the oilfield. Once the oilfield completely slowed down, I just kept on cooking and eventually, we built an industrial kitchen in my home to meet the demand and Taste of Ukraine took a life of its own.

What kind of products do you sell?

We sell a large variety of products, when it comes to the farmers market. We primarily focus on our perogies and cabbage rolls as those are the products that helped launch our company.

What is your “best selling” product?

It’s a toss-up between our perogies and cabbage rolls. Both of them are very popular!

What makes you a unique vendor?

Everything we sell from perogies, frozen meals, cabbage rolls etc. are handmade. Each perogy is hand pinched by our staff or family members. We also source as much of our ingredients as possible locally and use our traditional Ukrainian recipes. This helps maintain high-quality products that stand out on their own.

Where are you located and/or can you find your products at other locations?

We love Red Deer and the downtown so much that we even opened our own store called Artisan Food Market on Ross. You can find all of our products there along with other like-minded food vendors! We have over 32 vendors under one roof!

How long have you been a part of the Downtown Red Deer Market?

We have been part of the Downtown Red Deer Market for 3 years now. We absolutely love it here!

What is your favourite thing about the Downtown Red Deer Market?

Our family thinks it’s very cool how the DBA in association with the City of Red Deer are able to close the Gaetz street down to host a Farmers Market every week. It gives you a small sense of a European market style.

Check them out at this weeks market! And check back next week for our next vendor features!

Business Spotlight: H&R Block

This week’s Business Spotlight shines on H&R Block’s downtown location at # 107, 4711 51 Avenue. We sat down with District Manager Janice Will, to learn more!

What is your business?

H& R Block is a tax preparation business and we help clients file their personal, business corporate and US taxes and we also do bookkeeping for our clients. When you file your taxes at H&R Block you can do it a number of ways such as virtually, you can upload your files on our website and a tax expert will file it for you and prepare it for you. And then you can also bring in to our easy drop off where you just put your tax documents into an envelope, and you bring it into our office. And then a tax expert will go over that with you and file that on your behalf. We also have our Do It Yourself software.

Now the other thing that we have is our Tax Academy, we offer that every year starting in September, and this is how we recruit our tax associates for the coming year.

When did your business open?

Our business opened in 1994 at this location and H&R block has been in Canada for over 55 years.

What makes your business unique?

Actually we have a couple of things that make us unique and one is our H&R Block Advantage and what that is, is it’s basically a maximum refund guarantee and audit assistance. This is offered to everyone who files with H&R Block at no cost, and also that we’re open year-round. The other thing is our Tax Academy, we have online classes, and this is the first time that we’ve just had strictly online due to COVID and they’re available at convenient times. The total course is 72 hours and in a guided online classroom setting. It includes tax theory and hands-on interactive learning with the latest tax preparation software. In this, there are real-world tax exercises as well as you can have one on one with your virtual instructor and know that once you complete the course then you have an opportunity to interview for employment with H&R Block and definitely have positions available. And if you are hired then we offer a flexible schedule as well as you can take more online learning and other courses to build your tax knowledge as well as your client base.

Another thing that makes us unique if our free second look. It will review up to three of your past returns looking for money, and well do that for free. So if others have done your taxes and you wanted them to be looked over we will actually look over those for free and help you file them if need be.

What are some products/services that you offer?

One of the things that we offer is the instant refund. This service is a great benefit for clients because then they can get their refund instantly. If you file your taxes at H&R Block and meet with a tax associate, we can see whether or not you can qualify for that. The other thing that we have is Peace Of Mind and by purchasing the Peace Of Mind Extended Service Plan you’ll have one of our professionals that’ll be with you through your ongoing CRA assessment or audit throughout the entire process. We also have Pay With Refund. And that’s paid later with H&R Block’s Pay With Refund. If you’re getting a refund, then you could qualify and then rather than paying out of pocket fees, we will take them out of your refund. So you can get your taxes often, catch 22 to get your taxes filed without making a payment.

Why did you choose Downtown Red Deer as the location for your business?

Because it’s very central to a lot of other businesses and because we have a great location just in the midst of the downtown as well.

What do you think makes Downtown vibrant?

So I was thinking about this and I love how many activities we have throughout the year. We have the Wednesday Downtown Red Deer Market. We have the seasonal patio programming, CentreFest, the parade, Red Deer Lights the Night, and many more. And all these activities are year-round!

I love Downtown Red Deer because… it’s the Culture Center of our community. And that is what I feel it is. And I really feel that the Downtown Business Association has been a great partner and driving clients to the downtown for our businesses, and also making it part of the culture center for Red Deer.

Be sure to head into H&R Block for all of your tax needs! For more information about H&R Block visit their website!

Business Spotlight: Studio 11 Beautique

For this week’s business spotlight, we stopped into Studio 11 Beautique! This charming space is located at #310, 5008 50th Street (right above MC College), Red Deer. This studio offers a wide variety of aesthetic services in a very pleasant and modern setting. We sat down with Kristyn Sutherland, owner of Studio 11 to learn more!

What is your business?

Our business is basically a hub for entrepreneurs who are in the aesthetics industry. They are contracted out of Studio 11 and use this space to run their businesses. We can offer them the support they need such as marketing, technique classes, and business consulting. Our focus is to reset the industry, to move away from competition, and to concentrate on collaboration. We are looking at how we can work together to build something big.

When did your business open?

Studio 11 was previously owned and then I took over September 2019. The previous owner was working with 3 or 4 staff members and now we are up to 9.

What makes your business unique?

Our focus is collaboration over competition. We want to make sure we are there to support each other and our clients. Women in business are very popular right now and it’s important for us to show that we are an example of how we can work together.

What are some products/services that you offer?

We offer lash services including extensions, lifts, and tints. We currently have 3 nail techs for nail services, we offer spray tans and all waxing services.

Why did you choose Downtown Red Deer as the location for your business?

I was running a home-based business in Penhold when I was approached by Studio 11.  I came here for a few personal appointments and when I decided to purchase the business, I came on secretly as a staff member. The lease on the business was up in September so I had the option of moving and going somewhere or staying. I choose to stay mainly because most of my clients are in Blackfalds, Penhold and the Lacombe area and the downtown is central to these areas. I’ve had some issues getting my clients to come downtown, but I’ve had to redirect their thoughts a little in terms of what the downtown has to offer.

What do you think makes Downtown vibrant?

I can take a break and walk down to City Roast and see and experience what’s great about downtown. It is beautiful if you focus on what is beautiful about it. All the different little stores, the different people that you meet, it is unique and cultural.

I love Downtown Red Deer because… of the live music in the summertime, the outdoor patio, the great shops, and restaurants is what I love the most!

These inspiring ladies at Studio 11 are great examples of what empowering women in business Is all about! They are on the pulse of a changing industry by their unwavering support for each other and their community! Be sure to stop in and see Kristyn and her team for all your aesthetic needs!

Featured Vendors of the Week: Field Stone Fruit Wines and Nixon Honey

Feature vendors are back and this week’s vendors are Field Stone Fruit Wines and Nixon Honey. Check out their interviews below!

Field Stone Fruit Wines

How did you start your business?

Field Stone Fruit Wines’ story began in 2005, when we received the first-ever estate winery license in Alberta.  Our family-run winery and farm are nestled into 50 acres of mature berry orchards located forty minutes east of Calgary — just outside Strathmore — one of the sunniest regions in Canada.  Owners Elaine and Marvin Gill are both the farmers and the winemakers.

We’re proud to tell you that all Field Stone wines are made from 100% Alberta-grown crops of raspberries, strawberries, wild black cherries, black currants, red cherries, and saskatoon berries, 75% of which is grown on our own orchard.

We planted our orchards in 1998.  For more than a decade, our popular “U-Pick” Bumbleberry Orchards was known for its exceptional fruit — harvesting plump, extra-sweet, sun-kissed berries.  When our growing yields began to exceed our ability to sell all our crops as fresh fruit, we transitioned into crafting our wines.

We offer five unique Fruit Wines – ranging from our off-dry “Black Currant” to our semi-sweet “Strawberry-Rhubarb” –  as well as five unique Dessert Wines – also ranging in sweetness and style.

Our goal is to produce quality fruit in our own fields and transferring that excellent fruit into a delicious product that customers love.  We bring the taste of summer to our customers all year long – a labour of love from field to glass

What kind of products do you sell?

Fruit Wines and Dessert Wines.

What is your “best selling” product?

Bumbleberry Fruit Wine.

What makes you a unique vendor?

We are Alberta’s very first estate winery, growing 75% of the fruit in our wines right on our own orchard.

Where are you located and/or can you find your products at other locations?

We are located south of Strathmore, Alberta, but sell our products at many farmers’ markets and retails stores around the province. See our website for details.

How long have you been a part of the Downtown Red Deer Market?

Since 2013!

What is your favourite thing about the Downtown Red Deer Market?

A lovely setting in the heart of the city with great vendors and great customers!

Nixon Honey

How did you start your business?

I began by becoming a vendor for Nixon Honey.

What kind of products do you sell?

Honey and Maple Syrup!

What is your “best selling” product?

Flavoured honey and bourbon aged syrup.

What makes you a unique vendor?

All of our products are organic!

Where are you located and/or can you find your products at other locations?

You’ll be able to find Nixon Honey at your local grocery store!

How long have you been a part of the Downtown Red Deer Market?

Approximately 5 years.

The ease of being a part of the market and the manager.

Business Spotlight: Collegiate Sports Medicine

We turn our business spotlight on Collegiate Sports Medicine Main Clinic, located at 51 21 47th St. This exceptional downtown business is leading the way in sports medicine in central Alberta. The clinic offers a wide variety of treatment options to everyday people and the team at collegiate strive to help everyone get back to being their best through knowledge, training, and expertise. We spoke to Melanie Tuck, founder and owner of Collegiate Sports Medicine to learn more!

What is your business?

We are Collegiate Sports Medicine. The word ‘collegiate’ means like a college so it has to do with teaching and continual learning.

We are an interdisciplinary clinic that is collaborative based. The idea came from the sport model of care where an athlete will receive access to services and collaborative teams of care providers immediately after an injury. For example, an athletic therapist with the team can assess the injury, will immediately talk to the team doctor, will contact imaging or a surgical consult if needed, and get back to the therapist who is doing the rehab.

So, the process is very timely and collaborative, and in keeping with the sport model of care, we are educating the athlete.

From that perspective, we felt very strongly that every person, whether they are an athlete or not, deserves the same level of care. We wanted to advocate on behalf of the client and bridge the gap between clients and other health care professionals.

We are always striving to be better for our clients, they in turn push us to stay educated on new and better treatment options to give them the best possible outcome in their recovery.

When did your business open?

Our original location on Ross St opened in 2003. This location opened in 2013.

What makes your business unique?

We are a values-based organization and strive to hire people with the same mindset and aligned philosophies such as learning/teaching, responsibility, ethics, and integrity. To us, that’s more important in our hiring then if they have the right credentials. We tend to look for people that live an active lifestyle and have backgrounds in sport, kinesiology, and movement sciences. It is what sets us apart.

What are some products/services that you offer?

Our primary services are physiotherapy, athletic therapy, massage therapy, and chiropractic with a sports specialty. The practitioners that specialize in these disciplines offer additional services:

  • Injury assessment & rehabilitation
  • MVA treatment
  • Manuel & manipulative therapy
  • Headache & TMJ treatment
  • Postoperative treatment
  • Male & female pelvic health
  • Injury specific client education and home programming
  • Personal training/rehabilitation
  • Acupuncture/IMS/dry needling
  • Chronic pain & acute injury care
  • Running gait analysis and biochemical eval
  • Gait and posture assessment
  • Active release techniques
  • Shockwave therapy
  • Functional capacity evals
  • Myofascial release and cupping
  • Cranial sacral therapy
  • Sport and therapeutic massage
  • Deep tissue & trigger point massage
  • Courses/workshops
  • Athletic, k taping, and taping for dysfunction
  • Vestibular rehabilitation therapy
  • Custom foot orthotics & custom knee bracing

We have a store in our main clinic that carries items such as sports medicine supplies, a variety of braces as well as exercise and rehab equipment. We only carry high-quality items, that are sports specific and that we endorse.

Why did you choose Downtown Red Deer as the location for your business?

I was honestly just looking for a place and came upon the original location. We remained in downtown because our clients found the location central for them to get too.  We were able to move to this current location and offer our clients free parking which was the issue on Ross St. We are well-positioned here.

What do you think makes Downtown vibrant?

I think the arts and entertainment that is available, the things that were added recently such as the flowers, music, sculptures, and restaurants. As well, the patio that was put in for people to have more outdoor seating in the summer, the markets, and the sandwich boards that are out in front of businesses, all give it a small-town feel and I think people really like that.

I love Downtown Red Deer because… It is where we started our business! We have extended outside of downtown with a clinic in Olds and at the college but downtown holds a special feeling because it is where we began.

Along with the downtown location, Collegiate Sports Medicine has two other locations to serve you!

Red Deer Campus

Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

Unit 104 – 120 College Circle in Red Deer

Business Spotlight: City Center Vacuum

This week’s Business Spotlight is with City Center Vacuum Sales & Service. This business has been in operation for the past 27 years, in the same location at 5311 – 50th Avenue. They are known for carrying high-quality products, fair pricing, and excellent customer service.  Its no wonder they have people that travel from out of town just to shop with them! We sat down with James and Rose-Marie Sherman to learn more!

What is your business?

We are vacuum sales and service with janitorial products as well. Our products include portable vacs, built-in vacs, carpet shampoo, vacuum bags, belts, and service repairs.

When did your business open?

We opened in May of 1993 and have been in the same location ever since.

What makes your business unique?

It’s a go-to business, it’s a destination. We supply what people can’t find elsewhere and our products are of high quality, people come to us when they are tired of buying disposable products. Customers like our 1 on 1 service. They like the honesty and sincerity we offer when they come to us for repairs. James is awesome with customers over the phone as well, he can assess what’s going on by asking the customer to perform different tests they can do at home, and then go from there. A lot of times the customer ends up being able to fix it at home and we can help them through it. It saves them from having to make a trip down here or us having to go to them.

What are some products/services that you offer?

As mentioned, we do repairs on most models of vacuums, we carry items that are hard to find elsewhere, Canadian Tire or Walmart won’t carry all the accessories for vacuums that we carry. We have a whole wall in the store dedicated to bags, filters, belts, and shampooing parts. We also carry janitorial supplies for commercial use. Some of these products are also for household use too. If you need something to clean toilets or hard water stain removal, then we have that available.

Why did you choose Downtown Red Deer as the location for your business?

I ran another vacuum store downtown for several years before we opened this one. It was a partnership but when that ended, we moved to this location. This was a built-in vacuum store called Air Stream, so we just absorbed it and went from there.

What do you think makes Downtown vibrant?

I think it’s about retailers and family business owners that believe in building and supporting downtown. We’ve had a lot of bad representation and even gossip that’s not always true. What is happening in downtown is happening everywhere in Red Deer. We want to stay in downtown and help to support the other businesses in the area.

Finish this sentence: I love Downtown Red Deer because…The sense of community, family, local businesses, and its always in motion. It has taken care of me and my family for the past 27 years, it helped me raise 5 kids by providing me with a good location for a business. I find most of the downtown people support each other.

City Center Vacuum Sales & Service are truly experts in their field. Their highly knowledgeable team will make your shopping experience a pleasure and you will know you are getting exactly what you need for a great price.
